A syndicator offered me a 1.5% consulting fee on a $2.3M raise and I realized I had no idea if that was high or low.
Looked at three other engagements I know about from the past eight months and the range was 0.75% to 2.1% on raises between $1.8M and $4M, which tells me almost nothing except that nobody is pricing this the same way. The 2.1% was a guy who had already placed capital with that operator before, so there was a trust factor baked into why they paid it. The 0.75% was a one-time review, no ongoing involvement. Mine would have been somewhere in between, maybe two calls a month through the raise period and a deliverable at close. I passed on it, mostly because I wanted to understand the end buyer situation better and the answers I got were slow, which is its own answer. But I'm still sitting with the question of whether 1.5% on a raise that size is a number someone decided or a number someone inherited from a prior deal and nobody pushed back on.
