Do you tell LPs a service handles their portal, or does that stay behind the curtain?
Onboarding for a raise I'm helping on, and the welcome email drafts split two ways. One says "our investor relations team" and signs from the fund. The other names the outside firm, says who they are, and gives their direct line for doc and portal questions.
Argument for naming them: LPs are going to figure it out the first time somebody with a different email domain answers a wire verification question, and finding out by accident feels worse than being told. Also it routes the boring stuff correctly on day one instead of everything landing in the sponsor's inbox.
Argument for keeping it internal-sounding: LPs invested in the sponsor's judgment and some of them read outsourced IR as a thin operation. I've heard an LP say out loud that she wants the guy who signs the acquisition to be the guy who answers her email. Naming an outside firm invites the question of what else is outsourced.
There's a middle version where the portal support address is generic, the outside team answers under the fund's domain, and anything that isn't administrative goes to the sponsor. That's arguably clearer for the LP and slightly murky about who's on the other end.
Curious how the room comes down on it, because I've seen sponsors do all three and none of them seemed to lose investors over it.
In LP onboarding, how do you handle an outside IR firm?
