Started from zero six weeks ago and I don't understand what I actually own
I opened a brokerage account, put 2,000 into a REIT index fund because a book told me it was the easiest way to start in real estate, and now I'm looking at the holdings list and I don't understand what I bought.
The fund holds something like 160 companies. Some of them own apartments. Some own warehouses. One of the biggest ones owns cell towers, which I did not know counted as real estate. There's one that owns data centers and one that owns billboards and several that own hospitals and nursing homes.
So my question is basic. Is this real estate investing? I thought real estate investing meant owning a building and collecting rent from a tenant. This feels like owning a piece of a company that owns buildings, which is a step further away, and I can't tell if that step matters or if I'm being precious about it.
Also I got a small dividend last month, 21 dollars, and I don't know what to do with it. It's sitting in cash. Reinvest or not?
