So a broker owner just takes a cut of everyone else's deals?
I'm trying to understand where the money actually comes from in a brokerage. My understanding, which is probably half wrong: an agent has a salesperson license and has to hang it under a broker. The broker owns the firm and takes a percentage of every commission the agents earn. Someone in another thread said most brokerages make more from fees they charge their own agents than from the commission split, which sounded backwards to me. If the agents are paying the desk fees and the E&O fees, what is the broker actually doing for them? I want income that doesn't turn into a second job, so I'm mostly asking to understand whether this is a business you own or a business that owns you.
