My relocation contact gave me a letter of intent in September and I treated it like a signed lease
Furnished a one-bedroom in Tempe, $4,200 in furniture plus $180 in kitchenware and linens, based on that letter. October came and the company pushed the start date to November. November came and the employee took a different position. The letter had no binding language, no deposit requirement, nothing. I went back and read it after the fact and it says "anticipates placing" and "subject to final approval." I had read "anticipates placing" as close enough. It was not close enough. Sat on that unit furnished from September through mid-January before I got a 60-day placement from a medical device rep that covered about half of what I had already lost in carrying costs. The furniture is still in there, which is fine, but I wrote that $4,380 off as tuition. Now I want a signed lease or at minimum a refundable hold deposit before I touch a furniture vendor. The letter of intent process feels standard in this niche and maybe it is for operators with five or six units who can absorb a vacant one. I had two units total at the time.
