My brother said "you don't own anything with those REITs, you own a receipt" and I couldn't come back at him
I've been sitting on that for three days and I still don't have a clean answer. I hold two positions, Realty Income and a healthcare name I bought in 2022 when it was down around 30% from peak. Both are paying. But when he said that in the truck last Tuesday I went quiet for a minute because there is something in it that bothers me. With the fourplex we closed in April I can walk the units, I know the mechanicals, I know what the roof cost and when. With the REITs I have a number on a screen and a quarterly PDF I half-read. He is wrong that it's fake, the income is real and the healthcare one has done fine on price recovery too. But the accountability is different and I think that's what he actually means, even if he can't say it that clean. When something goes sideways on Hough Avenue I can go fix it. When something goes sideways in the REIT I can sell or I can wait. That's the whole menu. Curious whether people who came from active ownership ever made peace with that or if it just stays uncomfortable.
