My cabin grossed 41k last year and I still wrote a check at tax time
That number stops me every time I look at it. Forty-one thousand dollars came in and I still owed money at the end. My bookkeeper at the time was logging gross revenue and flagging the big stuff but the depreciation on the structure, the cleaning supplies my co-host bought on her personal card, the mileage I drove to Gatlinburg twice to deal with the hot tub, none of it was captured consistently. So my taxable income on that property looked about 12k higher than it should have. The CPA caught some of it but she was working from what I gave her, and what I gave her was incomplete. I do not think I lost 12k to taxes but I genuinely cannot tell you what I lost because the books were not clean enough to know. That is the part that bothers me more than the actual number.
